About Arnie:   Arnie was first licensed as KN3ANU at the age of 13 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He quickly upgraded to a General Class ticket (K3ANU) and received an Official Relay Station (ORS) appointment from the ARRL and so began his love of CW traffic handling.  This ARRL voluntary position allowed him to participate in the league’s sponsored CD party contests fueling his enjoyment of radiosport.  After four years of amateur radio activity he put the hobby into hibernation while he attended Temple University and earned a B.S. in Biology and a M.D. degree.  There was little time for playing amateur radio during his post medical school specialty training in Urology at the University of California, San Francisco (WB6YHE), and two years of service as a Lt. Cmdr. in the United States Public Health Service, Indian Health Service, on the Navajo and Hopi reservations (WB5ICL, WA7SHB).

He moved to Southern California in 1976 with his wife (KA6DOW) and son (N6COG) and started a solo private urology practice. Arnie’s interest in amateur radio was rekindled.  He upgraded to the Extra Class license in 1977 as N6HC.  He retired from full time urology practice in 2001 and continued practicing as a part-time locum tenens physician. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a long time member of the California and Orange County Medical Associations, a diplomate of the American Board of Urology and a member of both the American Urological Association and the Western Section of the AUA as well as the California Urological Association.  He was a member of the clinical faculty of Loma Linda University School of Medicine.

Arnie has been an ARRL member for more than fifty years and is a member of the Legacy Circle and Maxim Society. He serves as a Field QSL card checker for both ARRL and CQ awards. In the spirit of volunteerism, he has assisted in communications with the Hollywood Christmas Parade, various long distance races and has staffed the amateur radio booth at the Orange County fair. He was one of the amateur radio Captains for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Radio station (NG84O). He is an active member of the Southern California DX (Vice-President-2009 and served twice as the host of the August Bash BBQs) and Contest Clubs and the Orange County Amateur Radio Club.  He is a member of the A-1 operators club, the Straight Key Century Club (#1309) and the Ten-Ten International club (#29959). He has earned many ARRL and CQ-Magazine operating awards including WAS (6 bands, SSB, CW, RTTY), DXCC Honor Roll, DXCC (8 bands, SSB, CW, RTTY), WAZ (CW & SSB), WAC, WPX and VUCC.  He is an active contester and has won numerous certificates for participation in both domestic and DX competitions.  He has operated from many places around the continental United States as well as in Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico and Prince Edward Island.

His modest home station has been used by many guest operators and he has hosted visiting amateurs to Southern California at the “Hotel California” guest suite.

He is one of the SCDXC members that initiated the ICOM-730 transceiver loaner program to assist an amateur get on the air until they can afford the purchase of their own equipment.  He has helped disabled amateurs or newcomers to amateur radio erect antennas and set up their own station.

One of his ham radio goals was to be part of a DXpedition team to an exotic locale.  The opportunity presented itself in 2005 on the K7C operation to Kure atoll in the far northwest Hawaiian Island chain.  The adventure was addictive and in September 2007, he was a team member of the 3B7C DXpedition to St. Brandon Island in the Indian Ocean and served as both operator and medical officer.  His next DXpedition was to Clipperton Island, TX5C, in March 2008.  The last DXpedition in which he participated was the K4M Midway atoll DXpedition in October 2009 which was honored by the Southwest Ohio DX Association with the DXpedition of the Year award at the Dayton convention in 2010.  He has been published in various amateur radio journals regarding his experience as a Dxpedition physician and he was a frequent contributor to the SCDXC monthly BULLetin.  Arnie has been the guest speaker at various clubs, both locally and nationally, presenting “behind the scenes” activities of the DXpeditions in which he has participated.
